The Fauna and Flora found in Chapada dos
Veadeiros are typical of those of the Brazilian Cerrado.
The rocks and stones of CHAPADA DOS
VEADEIROS originated relatively poor soils. All kinds of animals and vegetation are found
in its swelling ground. The Cerrado's climate is classified as tropical of altitude. Two
seasons predominate: the dry and the rainy one.
The Cerrado has about 60,000 insect species,
935 bird s pecies, 298 mammals and 238
reptiles. Although a complete research of the park's
fauna hasn't yet been made, some of them stand out: Pantanal Deer (Blastocerus
dichtomus),
which inhabits the areas closer to the river, the Campeiro Deer (Ozotocerus
bezoarticus),
the Jaguar (Panthera onca), the Maned Wolf (Chrysocyum brachyurus) - all these threatened
to extinction - the Tapeti (Sylvilagus
brasiliensis), the Armadillo (Priodontes giganteus), the Anteater (Myemecophaga
tridactyla), the Brazilian Ostrich (Rhea
americana), the Capybara (Hidrochaeris hidrocaeris), the Tapir (Tapirus
terrestris).
Others include the exotic Green Beek Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), Black Vulture
(Coragyps atratus) and King Vulture (Sarcoramphas papa).
The trees of the
Cerrado have a curved format, because of the presence or absence of water and
nutrients.
In the highest parts of the Cerrado, yellow soil predominate, followed by the
red, dark red, gray and black. The leaves are mostly deciduous, and they fall in the dry period to
avoid the loss of water by the plants.
In the forests, the most
common species are:
Pau d'Arco Roxo (Tabebuia ipe), Copaíba (Copal Tree / Copaifera granifolia),
Aroeira (California pepper tree / Astronium urundeuva), Tamanqueira (Cork Tree /
Stryphnodendron sp). There are also the Jerivá (variety of Palm Tree / Arecastrum
romanzaffianum), Buritis (Wine-palm / Mauritia sp), Babaçu (Babassu / Orbignya
martiana)
and Viuvinha (Jacaranda brasiliana). Outside of the main forest are, you can also see
Pau-Terra Vermelho (Qualea multifolia), Sandpaper tree (Curatella americana), Murici rói
rói (Byrsonima cocaldsifolia), Cachew Tree (Anacardium sp) and the Mandioqueira
(Quaiba
spp).
