Located in the State of Goiás,
250 km (about 150 miles) from Brasília and 500 Km (about 300 miles) from Goiânia, the
Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is located in a wonderful area, right in the heart of
Brazil - the Chapada dos Veaderios. The park, created on January 11, 1961 by
decree nº. 49875/61 occupies an area of 65,515 acres. The visitors can enjoy its hot
tropical, semi-humid climate, with average year temperatures of 24/26 degrees C, ranging
from the minimum of 4/8 degrees C and reaching a maximum of 40/42 degrees C.
With altitudes between 600 and 1650 meters, it
corresponds to the highest plain in Central Brazil. The highest point of the park is Serra
da Santana.
The main river that flows in Veadeiros National
Park is Rio Preto, a tributary of Tocantins River. Along its course, there are many
waterfalls, as the Rio Preto Falls (12o meters high, 80 meters at the base) and the
Cariocas. The canyons are just as beautiful, with walls of up to 40 meters high and
valleys of up to 300 meters.
Rock crystals ara present in the soil of the rich
Cerrado, which is the nam e of the vegetation in this
region, an open pasture. Forest are
also present in the region, where more than 25 species of orchids can be
found, besides
other Brazilian species as Pau d'Arco Roxo, Copaíba (Copa Tree), Aroeira (California
pepper tree), Tamanqueira (Cork Tree), Jerivá (variety of Palm Tree), Buritis
(Wine-palm)
and Babaçu (Babassu).
The rich fauna of the region includes species
threatened to extinction as the Campeiro and Pantanal deer, the Jaguar, the Maned Wolf and
others as the Rhea (Brazilian ostrich), Seriema,
Tapeti, Armadillo (Tatu Canastra), Anteater, Capybara (Capivara), Tapir (Anta), Green-Beek
Toucan, Black Vulture, King Vulture.
Besides having a Visitor Center, the Veadeiros National
Park has special lodging for researchers. Visitors are accompanied by tour guides that can
be reached in Alto Paraíso de Goiás or São Jorge village, neighboring the
park.
